Dubai to Salalah by road: 1,220 km, 12–16 h via Hatta or Al Ain–Mezyad. We prepare border papers and insurance so you can start in Dubai in an Omani car.
Most UAE rental agreements do not allow the car to leave the country. The ones that do need a no-objection letter, Oman insurance and several days' notice, and charge for it. That is why every road-trip guide ends with "check with your rental company".
Our answer is different. The car is registered in Oman and belongs to Nomad Tours LLC in Muscat. We drive it to you in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, hand it over with the cross-border documents already prepared, and you drive it home to Oman. On the Oman side it is simply an Omani car on Omani roads, and you can drive it anywhere in the country.
The OMR 30 pack is a one-off charge per rental and covers the documents the border posts ask for:
You carry the pack in the glovebox. UAE exit officers and Omani entry officers will ask for the letter and the registration; have your passport and licence ready with them.
Border fees charged by the authorities, such as the UAE vehicle exit fee, are paid by you at the post and are not part of our pack.
| Al Ain–Mezyad (Hafeet) | Hatta (Al Wajajah) | |
|---|---|---|
| From Dubai | E66 to Al Ain, about 1 h 45 to the border | E44 to Hatta, about 1 h 30 to the border |
| From Abu Dhabi | Direct via Al Ain, about 2 h | Longer; not the natural choice |
| Oman side | Buraimi, then Route 21 to Ibri and Adam, joining Route 31 south | Exits towards Sohar or inland via Mahdah to Ibri; adds distance to Salalah |
| Best for | Dubai and Abu Dhabi starts heading straight for Salalah | Sharjah and northern-emirates starts, or when Mezyad queues are long at Eid |
Both borders get busy on the first and last days of Eid and UAE school holidays. Arrive early in the morning. Some posts have reduced hours overnight.
Mezyad to Salalah is about 1,050 km: Buraimi to Ibri (shops, fuel, a Lulu), Ibri to Adam, Adam to Haima, Haima to Thumrait, Thumrait to Salalah. The Haima to Thumrait stretch is about three hours with few reliable services. Fill up at Ibri, Adam and Haima. Long sections are single carriageway with truck traffic; camels cross without warning. Do not plan to arrive after dark.
Day one: leave Dubai at 05:00, clear the border by 08:00, lunch in Ibri, overnight in Nizwa (a short detour from Route 21) or push on to Haima. Day two: Haima to Salalah is about four hours, so you arrive with the afternoon free.
Leave Dubai at 04:00, two drivers, fuel at Ibri and Haima, Salalah by early evening. 14 to 16 hours door to door. Only sensible outside khareef, when the last 80 km from Thumrait are clear of fog.
| Car | Bus | Flight | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time | 12–16 h | About 21–22 h via Muscat, with a change | About 2 h in the air; flydubai daily, Oman Air several times a week |
| Cost | Daily rate × days + OMR 90 drive-out + one day's rate + OMR 30 pack + fuel; live quote on this page | Fare per person | Fare per person, then a car at Salalah |
| What you get | Your own car for the whole trip, Nizwa and Wadi Dawkah on the way, no airport queues at Eid | Lowest cost for one traveller | Fastest; then collect a car ten minutes from Salalah Airport |
For a family of five with luggage the car usually wins on cost and always wins on flexibility. For one or two people with a week in Salalah, flying and collecting a car at our Salalah office is quicker.
Round trip: drive back to Dubai or Abu Dhabi and hand the car over where you collected it. The cross-border pack is a one-off charge per rental, so there is no second pack charge for the return.
One-way: drop the car at our Salalah office and fly home from Salalah Airport. Ask for a quote; the one-way fee for a UAE start ending in Salalah is quoted by our team before any hold is placed.
Any car in the fleet can make the trip on tarmac. Families take a 7-seater: Prado, Fortuner, Haval H9, Pajero, Land Cruiser. Two people on a budget take an Elantra or Sunny. Tell us which car you want; we confirm it is free for a UAE start on your dates. Minimum rental is 4 days.

12 to 16 hours for about 1,220 km, depending on the border queue, your stops and whether you share the driving. Most people split it with a night in Nizwa or Haima.
Al Ain–Mezyad (Hafeet) for the direct road to Ibri and Route 31. Hatta if you start in Sharjah or the northern emirates, or if Mezyad is queueing at Eid.
With us, yes. Our car is Oman-registered. We bring it to Al Quoz or Abu Dhabi with the exit letter, UAE insurance certificate and Mulkiya copy in a cross-border pack (OMR 30). The drive-out is OMR 90 plus one day's rate, and we need 72 hours' notice.
GCC nationals enter on their ID. UAE residents of other nationalities need an Oman eVisa, applied for in advance through the Royal Oman Police portal. Requirements depend on your nationality and change; check the portal before you travel.
Yes, regularly as far as Haima. Fill up at Al Ain before the border, at Ibri, at Adam and at Haima. Haima to Thumrait is about three hours with few reliable stops. Carry Omani rial; not every station takes cards.
The roads are good, but camels, truck traffic and fatigue make night driving on Route 31 a poor idea. Plan to be off the road by dusk. In khareef the Thumrait to Salalah descent is in fog from mid-July.
Yes. Return the car to our Salalah office, and the shuttle takes you to the airport. Ask us for the one-way quote: quoted by our team before any hold is placed.
