For those places you need a 4x4 with a low-range gearbox, not a crossover with an all-wheel-drive badge. Every car on this page has low range. Most are body-on-frame: Land Cruiser 300 and 200, Prado, Fortuner, Haval H9, Tank 500, Pajero, Montero Sport, Xterra, 4Runner and the Wranglers. The Grand Cherokee and the MG RX8 are marked where the drivetrain depends on the trim.
A 4x4 also makes sense in khareef even if you stay on tarmac. The roads up to Ittin and Jebel Samhan are steep, wet and foggy, and a heavier car with higher clearance is easier to live with when a stream crosses the road. It does not make you faster. In fog the rule is the same for everyone: lights on, slow down, do not stop in the lane.
Off-road driving is only permitted in our 4WD cars. Please keep to existing tracks and stay out of the wadis when rain is forecast.

Part-time 4WD means you drive in 2H on tarmac and select 4H or 4L on gravel and sand. Full-time 4WD can stay in 4H on tarmac.

Not for the lake, the waterfall viewpoint and the picnic areas, which are reached on tarmac. You need one for the tracks above the falls and for any route that leaves the asphalt.
Yes, in a 4x4 with low range and with Premium cover. Fill up at Thumrait. Tell us your route before you go; the desert north of Shisr has no fuel and patchy phone signal. We recommend a guide for first-time sand driving and we can put you in touch with one.
It is all-wheel drive without a low-range gearbox. It is fine for the mountain tarmac and graded gravel, not for dunes. It is listed under Luxury, not here.
