Khareef Salalah: the season, and the right car for it

Khareef in Salalah: 21 June–21 September. Fog and drizzle, which roads need a 4x4, minimum rental days, and how to book before August sells out.

Dates

Our khareef season runs from 15 June to 15 September. Oman's official tourism season is 21 June to 21 September. The hills turn green from the second half of July, and the peak for visitors is late July and all of August. Over a million people come to Dhofar each khareef, and more than half of them arrive in August.

Khareef rates apply to any rental that falls inside 15 June to 15 September. The minimum rental is 4 days.

What khareef is

A monsoon that touches only this corner of Arabia. Cloud sits on the mountains behind Salalah, a fine drizzle falls for weeks, and the temperature drops to the low twenties while the rest of the Gulf is above forty. Wadi Darbat fills and its waterfall runs. The Ittin road and Jebel Samhan disappear into fog. The sea is rough and swimming is banned on most beaches; the blowholes at Mughsail are at their best.

Driving in fog and rain

Most of Dhofar's khareef roads are tarmac, so the issue is visibility and grip, not the car.

  • Use dipped headlights, not full beam, in fog. Full beam reflects back at you.
  • Slow down early on the Ittin road and the climb to Jebel Samhan. Both are steep, wet and busy at weekends.
  • Do not stop in the lane to look at the view or the camels. Pull fully off the road onto firm ground.
  • Streams cross the road in places. Drive through slowly; do not drive into moving water you cannot see the bottom of.
  • Wadi beds flood without warning. Stay out of them when rain is forecast, in any car.
  • Camels and cattle wander onto the roads above the plain. Expect them after every bend.
  • Give trucks room on the Thumrait descent; it is in cloud from mid-July.

A 4x4 helps on wet gravel and gives you clearance when a stream is deeper than it looks. It does not shorten braking distances on a wet road.

What is open and worth the drive

  • Wadi Darbat: the lake, the falls and the picnic areas, 40 km east on tarmac. Busiest in the afternoon.
  • Ayn Razat, Ayn Athum, Ayn Khor: springs on the mountain edge, all on paved roads.
  • Jebel Samhan viewpoint: paved to the top; the tracks beyond are 4x4 only.
  • Mughsail and the blowholes: 50 km west on the coast road. Rough sea, no swimming.
  • Taqah and Mirbat: old towns and forts east of Salalah, open all season.
  • The khareef festival at Ittin: evenings, from mid-July.

Cars for the season

Any car in the fleet is fine on the tarmac routes above. Families take a 7-seater. If you want the tracks above Wadi Darbat or the top of Jebel Samhan, take a 4x4 with low range.

Some of our cars are based in Salalah all year. Others are brought down from Muscat for your booking. If your car has to be brought down, a positioning fee of OMR 35 per leg applies during khareef, and it is shown before you confirm. A car already in Salalah costs nothing extra.

Book early

August cars are the first to go. Send your request as soon as your dates are fixed; you do not need a card to request. If your dates are already taken, we will offer the nearest free dates, another car class, or a pickup in Muscat with the drive down on Route 31.
