Who this category is for
The same is true for the drive down from Muscat. Route 31 is tarmac for all 1,000 km, and a Sunny or an Elantra will cover it in a day. Fill the tank at Haima; the next reliable stop is Thumrait, about three hours on.
Where a budget car stops is where the asphalt stops. No tracks, no wadi beds, no sand. The top of Jebel Samhan is reached on tarmac, but the tracks beyond the viewpoint are not for these cars. In khareef, a sedan is fine on the mountain roads if you keep your speed down and your lights on in fog.
The JAC JS6 and Mitsubishi ASX are compact crossovers. They sit higher and take graded gravel, but they have no low-range gearbox and off-road driving is not permitted in them.
