Salalah in January
Salalah in January: coolest month (24–27°C), best desert weather. What is open, which car to drive, and cars from OMR 15/day at the airport.
January weather: air, sea, rain days
January is the coolest month of the year on the Dhofar coast, which in Salalah means pleasant rather than cold. The air is dry, visibility is long enough to see Jebel Samhan sharp from the beach, and the sea is at its calmest.
| Measure | Typical January value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Average daytime high | about 27°C | en.wikipedia.org |
| Average night low | about 19°C | en.wikipedia.org |
| Sea temperature | about 25°C | seatemperature.org |
| Rain days | 0 to 1 | en.wikipedia.org |
Away from the coast, January is the one month when the desert is cold at night. Expect single figures on the sand before dawn and a sharp drop as soon as the sun goes.
What is open and what is happening in January
The UAE school winter break ends on 3 January and the Omani mid-year holiday ends in the same week, so the Gulf families leave in the first few days and the town settles. The beaches, Al Baleed, Sumhuram, Taqah Castle and Mirbat are all open with winter hours. The lake at Wadi Darbat is lower than in December but normally still has water and boats.
January is the first full month of the Moscow charter programme and the Polish, Czech and Hungarian flights continue weekly. The Muscat Festival runs in the capital in January and February; it is not in Salalah, but it is a reason some visitors do the Muscat to Salalah drive in this month.
Crowds and prices this month
After 3 January the resorts drop back to a comfortable level and the beach car parks are easy until the weekend. Airport arrivals are spread through the week rather than bunched.
January is on the winter rate, with the usual 4-day minimum. Fewer of our cars are needed in Muscat at this time of year, so more of them sit in Salalah; if yours does have to be trucked down, the positioning fee of OMR 50 per leg plus two days of that car's rate is shown on the quote, and we need 72 hours' notice.
Which car for this month
- Coast, town, springs, the paved mountain roads: any car.
- Empty Quarter, Fazayah, the Samhan plateau tracks: a 4x4 with low range, and we recommend Adventurer cover at OMR 15 per day, which brings the excess to zero. Off-road is permitted only in our 4WD cars.
- Desert camping: the Land Cruiser, Prado, Tank 500, Pajero or a Wrangler, with a rooftop tent, awning and off-road kit added at request. January nights justify the awning as a windbreak.

January is the month to do the Empty Quarter properly: cool days, firm sand in the morning, and cold clear nights for the stars.
Neighbouring months
December brings the holiday crowds and a slightly warmer sea. February is a degree warmer, equally dry and the single best month for Mughsail; in 2027 Ramadan begins around 8 February, which changes restaurant hours for the rest of the winter.
FAQ
Yes, and for many winter visitors it is the best month. Days are about 27°C, nights about 19°C and rain is almost unknown. The holiday crowds have left, every site is open and the desert is at its most comfortable. The only thing you will not see is green: the hills are brown from November to June.
Around 27°C in the afternoon and 19°C at night on the coast. You can swim and sit outside in the evening with a light layer. Inland it is different: at Shisr and in the dunes the night temperature can fall into single figures, so pack for a cold night if you camp.
Yes. The sea is about 25°C, flat and clear. Al Haffa and Dahariz are the town beaches, Mughsail is about 50 minutes west on tarmac, and Fazayah needs a 4x4 for the track down to the sand. Resort beaches fly flags on the rare windy day; the open beaches have no lifeguards, so swim where others are swimming.
No. The khareef green lasts from late July to October and the mountains are dry and brown by January. What you get instead is clear air, calm sea and the desert season. Wadi Darbat still has its lake and the springs at Ayn Razat still flow, but the waterfalls are dry.
Two to three weeks is normally enough once the holiday fortnight is over on 3 January. For 1 to 3 January, request as early as you can because the fleet is still committed to the Christmas and New Year bookings. A Salalah pickup outside khareef needs 72 hours' notice if the car has to come down from Muscat. There is no card and no charge to request.
