Salalah in March
Salalah in March: 27–30°C, last big charter month, Eid al-Fitr. What is open, which car to drive, and cars from OMR 15/day at the airport.
March weather: air, sea, rain days
March is the last of the cool months. The coast is still comfortable, the sea has warmed a degree and the first warm afternoons arrive inland. Mornings are the best time for anything away from the beach.
| Measure | Typical March value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Average daytime high | about 30°C | en.wikipedia.org |
| Average night low | about 22°C | en.wikipedia.org |
| Sea temperature | about 26°C | seatemperature.org |
| Rain days | 0 to 1 | en.wikipedia.org |
North of Thumrait the afternoon reaches the mid-thirties by the end of the month. The desert is still possible in March, but start early and be off the sand by midday.
What is open and what is happening in March
All beaches and sites are open. Wadi Darbat's lake is at its lowest of the winter and the boats have usually stopped; the springs at Ayn Razat and Ayn Athum still run. Mirbat's boat trips continue and the dhow harbour is busy before the summer lay-up.
Three dates shape the month:
- Eid al-Fitr falls around 9 March in 2027, with the Omani school break running to about 13 March. Gulf families fly in or drive down for four or five days.
- The UAE spring break takes up the last week of March and the first days of April, a second wave of UAE families by road.
- The European charter programme has its last full month. Moscow, Polish and Czech rotations continue weekly into April and taper off in May.
Crowds and prices this month
Eid week and the UAE spring break are busy in the way December is: full resorts, beach car parks full by mid-morning, several arrivals an hour at the airport. The rest of the month is calm.
March is on the winter rate with the 4-day minimum. Positioning works as in any winter month: if the car has to come down from Muscat for you, a fee of OMR 50 per leg plus two days of the car's daily rate appears on your quote, and we need 72 hours' notice. Over Eid, request early rather than hoping for a car on the day.
Which car for this month
- Beaches, town, Wadi Darbat, the springs, the paved roads up to Jebel Samhan: any car. Families over Eid take the 7-seaters first.
- Fazayah, the plateau tracks and the dunes: a 4x4 with low range plus Adventurer cover at OMR 15 per day for a zero excess. Off-road is permitted only in our 4WD cars.
- Empty Quarter: still worth it in early March with a dawn start; by late March the sand is hot by 11:00.

FAQ
Yes, with a note on dates. The weather is dry and warm, about 30°C by day and 22°C at night, the sea is about 26°C and everything is open. Avoid the Eid al-Fitr week and the UAE spring break if you want quiet beaches, or request your car early if those are your only dates.
About 30°C in the afternoon and about 22°C at night on the coast, which is warm but comfortable with the sea breeze. Inland the picture changes quickly: Thumrait and the desert reach the mid-thirties by the end of the month, so plan desert driving for the early morning.
Yes. The sea is about 26°C and still calm. Al Haffa and Dahariz are the town beaches, Mughsail is about 50 minutes west and Fazayah needs a 4x4 for the final track. Towards the end of the month the first swell of the year can arrive on exposed beaches; swim where the flags are green.
No. The mountains have been brown since November and stay that way until the khareef cloud returns in late June. What March gives you is warm dry weather, an open desert and water in the springs. If green hills are the point of your trip, plan for late July to early September instead.
For Eid al-Fitr week and the UAE spring break, request as soon as the holiday dates are published; 7-seaters go first. For the rest of the month two weeks is usually enough. A Salalah pickup outside khareef needs 72 hours' notice when the car has to come down from Muscat. Requesting is free and no card is needed until we confirm.
